The Reason We Wear the Helmet

You will often see a helmeted figure in our content. It is a quiet nod to Daft Punk. We found ourselves coming back to Daft Punk often while building Enhans. The reason had nothing to do with the music. It was how they thought about technology and people. They performed behind their robot helmets, but what they were really talking about was people. We build AI, but our attention has always been on people rather than the technology itself. This article is about what Daft Punk and Enhans have in common, and how that ended up as a helmet.

Robots Making Human Music

Daft Punk formed in Paris in 1993. From 1999, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo appeared in public only as robots. Robots making music that expressed human emotion. The machine was the tool. The human was always the point.

Same Place, Different Field

Enhans started somewhere else, building alongside AI. The question we set out to answer was a simple one. When AI can take on human work, what kind of relationship should it have with the people it works for?

The answer we landed on was already there in Daft Punk's music. Technology is a tool for people. They showed that a machine could become a way to express human emotion. For Enhans, AI is a way to turn human intent into action.

People Decide, AI Acts

That belief is built into our vision, which is to help human ideas come to life in the world. There is an order to that sentence. People do the thinking. AI helps make it real.

People decide. What to do, why to do it, how far to take it. Those calls belong to people. AI acts. Seeing a decision through to the end is the part AI does well. The two work as a partnership, side by side. This is about a future where human intent reaches the world faster, with people still at the center.

Why the Helmet

Once we noticed the resemblance, we borrowed something from their persona. The helmet. Daft Punk's helmets put the music forward instead of their own faces. Enhans uses the helmet in the same spirit. In our content, the helmet marks the AI working at a person's side. It signals that the AI is the support, that the decisions and the intent belong to the person, and that the AI executes alongside them. If Daft Punk's helmet said "we will speak through the music, not our faces," the Enhans helmet says "we work as a teammate, not the star."

What They Left, What Carries On

Daft Punk left the stage on February 22, 2021, but the question they had asked for 28 years did not leave with them. How should technology and people relate? The same question is back, now in front of AI. Will it replace people or work alongside them, stand above us or beside us?

Two years later, in 2023, Thomas Bangalter looked back on those 28 years in a single line during a BBC interview. "We were always on the side of humanity, not on the side of technology."

Enhans began on February 24, 2021, two days after Daft Punk left the stage. It is probably nothing more than a coincidence. Still, the question they raised through music is one we now face again as we work with AI. So we wear the helmet too.
